The “Ins and Outs” of Supplemental Breaking Systems

May 10 2009

Supplemental breaking systems are ideal, and sometimes mandatory, for use while towing vehicles behind motor homes. Not only will braking systems reduce stopping distances and save the life of the brakes on your rig, but they will ultimately provide a safer journey for you, your family, and everyone else out on the road.

Bucars Service Manager Paul Sinclair has this to say about supplemental braking systems:

“If you are towing a vehicle over 2,000 Kg, you should have some sort of supplemental breaking system. At Bucars we recommend two systems depending on the type of coach you own. If you have a diesel coach with airbrakes, I suggest the BrakeSafe Braking System from Blue Ox.”

According to the Blue Ox website, the Blue Ox BreakSafe Breaking System reduces braking distances by an average of 33 percent. How it works: BreakSafe uses air pressure from your RV’s breaks to produce a smooth stop while always maintaining a proper braking ratio.

The other braking system recommended by Sinclair is for hydraulic brakes and is called the Vantage from Brakebuddy. This is a simple system that physically applies the brakes of the vehicle being towed, taking the entire weight of the vehicle off of the motor home.
