Surge Protectors: Heroes for Your RV Power System
January 6 2010
When you purchase a new home computer, a highly recommended item to protect that investment is a surge protector. Most surge protectors for computers are also multi-port power bars that allow up to six other electronic devices to be plugged into it, for the monitor, the printer, etc. For this exact same reason, a surge protector is a highly recommended item to purchase for your RV.
Let's back up a bit and discuss some background information. What is a surge and what causes a surge? A surge, or "spike", is a sudden increase in electrical voltage substantially greater than what is designated for that circuit. A surge is a sudden increase in voltage that lasts longer than 3 nanoseconds. A spike is an increase that lasts only one or two nanoseconds. The effects of a surge can vary. A good analogy, is to imagine what would happen if you had too much water pressure being forced through a hose? The hose would burst either through the line or, more commonly, at a fitting. Imagine now, that electrical current is the water, the line is the power cord and the fittings are the electrical devices such as printed circuit boards.
In an RV, all power is 110/120 Volts AC, and the rated incoming amperage will be either 30 or 50 amp. Regardless of the incoming amperage, if a surge is detected above what the surge protection device is rated for, then it will interrupt all current from passing through to the RV electrical system.
Surges can be caused by a variety of reasons. Lightning strikes are a common blame for many surges, although they are not the most common reason. When lightning strikes near power lines, the increase in electrical energy can cause a sudden increase in voltage thousands of times higher than what is intended. More frequent causes include the switching on of high powered electrical devices, such as compressors or motors; incorrect or substandard wiring; utility company wiring problems or downed power lines.
The investment of a surge protector for your RV is a simple and effective "insurance policy" against having to replace thousands of dollars of electrical equipment and the inconvenience of the situation. As you travel in your RV, you are always connecting to some one else's power grid. Just like a condom can protect from STD's, the surge protector will help keep your RV electrical system healthy. Many offer features that also guard against low incoming line voltage and reverse polarity.
RV surge protectors do vary in style, and in price. There are portable versions that connect to the end of the RV power cord and plug directly into shore power, available in 30 or 50 amp versions. These are quick and easy to use and are available at many RV parts stores. If you purchase this style of surge protector, a locking device of some sort is highly recommended. To reduce the risk of theft, a "hard wired" or built in surge protector keeps the device securely inside the RV, and some versions even offer a remote monitor for the inquisitive RV'er to keep a constant eye on incoming voltage. Prices range from $200 and up to over $1,000 depending upon required features and amperage requirements.
